Remember
Rod Serling? There was once an episode on the Night
Gallery series hosted by Rod Serling entitled Big
Surprise, starring John Carradine. The story concerned three boys who
tempt fate one day when one of them decides to confront the old hermit of the
valley (played by Carradine); the boy is informed by the hermit that if he is
willing to dig deep in the ground near the old oak tree in the valley that
there he’ll find a “Big Surprise”. The boys find the spot
marked by the hermit and start digging; after awhile, two of the boys grow
weary and leave the determined one behind to pursue his mad dream of finding
whatever treasure awaits him…his Big
Surprise! As
the lengthening shadows descend upon the boy in the deep hole he has dug his
shovel hits something …YES…a
treasure chest!!! The boy could hardly contain his glee and is about to break-open the chest when
suddenly it begins to open all by itself! Scurrying to the far side of the pit
he has entrenched himself in, the boy is appalled to find none other than the
old hermit himself rising from the chest and who greedily winks at the boy and
says-"SURPRISE!!!"

The Big
Surprise is a metaphor for what awaits someone who depends too totally on the advice of others in
determining one’s future…because what you’ll find is your worst nightmare! A
future ordained for you by the wily whims of someone else’s
agenda. While discernment doesn’t provide you with a “quick
fix”, it does empower you to make informed decisions before you go about digging into
the unknown. Discernment is a process that recollects and awakens your own
intuitive skills of determining your future. Once you become responsibly aware
through discernment, your future becomes self-assured.
